Subnetting

Subnetting is the process of dividing a larger network into smaller, more manageable subnetworks or subnets. This technique enhances network organization, improves performance, and provides better security by isolating traffic within each subnet. Subnetting allows for efficient IP address management and ensures that broadcast traffic is contained within each subnet, reducing network congestion. It involves defining subnet masks to determine the size of each subnet and allocating IP addresses accordingly. By segmenting a network into subnets, organizations can optimize routing, enhance network performance, and apply different security policies to different segments of the network.
